August 17, 2013 World Journal - ALD Student Plays Erhu Astutely

By Flint Tye, Reporter, World Journal [Translated from Chinese] Link to Original Article
Irvine’s A Little Dynasty Chinese School student Kaleb Washington, a member of the school's orchestra, likes the Chinese erhu. Even though he has only learned the erhu for less than half a year, he can already play Chinese tunes like Muolihua, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Two Tigers. He recently visited China with his family hoping to improve his Chinese language and erhu skills, and to better understand Chinese culture. Kaleb’s Chinese name is Si Kai. He relocated from Ohio only two years ago. Si Kai’s mother said he has prior experience with the cello which has made learning the erhu much easier. His Chinese music teacher Ms. Joyce Yu said Si Kai began learning the erhu by mimicking the playing style of the cello. Si Kai has good Chinese conversation skills that he acquired at Chinese school. He has a brother who also plays the erhu at Chinese school. Si Kai’s mother says he has made a lot of Chinese friends because of his interest in Chinese and the erhu.
Si Kai is a member of A Little Dynasty’s Chinese Children’s Choir and Orchestra which currently has
about thirty members including ethnic Chinese, Caucasians, Hispanics, and Asians. They perform at community events. Surprisingly, all of their non-Chinese members sing very fluently in Chinese.
