ALD Student Chinese Orchestra
What are the chances that that a diverse group of typical Southern California kids from Asian-American, European-American, Latin-American, and African-American backgrounds can come together and form, of all things, a traditional Chinese orchestra? As improbable as that sounds, it actually happened!
A Little Dynasty Chinese School is all about making learning Chinese fun and accessible to kids of all backgrounds. This has resulted in a diverse student body, but that’s the way it should be in the diverse world we live in.
While the intellectual and practical benefits of bilingualism are self-evident, no kid wants to be forced to learn a second language, especially one as daunting as Mandarin Chinese. Recognizing this, A Little Dynasty Chinese School employs various fun and engaging activities to immerse kids in Chinese language, one of which is music, another skill that, like bilingualism, is a great brain booster.
The original intent was to teach students, in Chinese, how to play traditional Chinese instruments simply as a fun way of language learning. The students, however, unexpectedly developed a passion for playing their Chinese instruments and became remarkably proficient in a very short period of time. Some of the kids have even learned to play more than one Chinese instrument! These amazing kids formed a small and growing Chinese kid orchestra that has been a big hit with audiences young and old at places like Soka University, Bowers Museum, Lakeview Senior Center, Ontario Museum of Art and History, Irvine City Hall, among other places and has also been featured on some local TV shows and newspapers. Like internet cat videos, cute kids with unusual skills never get old.
A Little Dynasty Chinese School’s Student Chinese Orchestra is truly a group of amazing and talented young kids.
